Titolo articolo: Due nuovi testimoni dei volgarizzamenti del Liber de doctrina dicendi et tacendi di Albertano da Brescia

Two additions to the previous censuses of Albertano da Brescia’s Liber de doctrina dicendi et tacendi vernacular tradition · This paper offers two additions to the previous censuses of Albertano da Brescia’s De doctrina dicendi et tacendi vernacular tradition given by Angus Graham, Giulio Vaccaro and Paolo Divizia. The essay focuses on the bilingual quotations from the Liber transmitted by the ms. MA 465, ex Ó iv 36, of the Biblioteca Angelo Mai of Bergamo (cc. 46r-78v) [Bg], dated 1469, and on the vernacular, shortened translation of Albertano’s work transmitted by the ms. 179 of the Biblioteca Albornoziana del Reale Collegio di Spagna of Bologna (cc. 425r/v) [Bo]. After a brief introduction concerning the vast manuscript tradition of the Italian translations of the Liber, the article will deal with the peculiarities of the texts contained in each manuscript and the reasons of their interest.

Titolo articolo: La resa del plurilinguismo e del transtilismo della Commedia di Dante nelle traduzioni francesi del XX e XXI secolo

The transposition of plurilinguism and ‘transtilismo’ of Dante’s Comedy in French translations of the 20th and 21th centuries · This paper provides a comparative analysis of the choices made by 20th and 21st century French translators of Dante’s Comedy in transposing one of the main features of the poem, that is the language plurality and the «transtilismo». After some initial remarks about the choice to modernize or reproduce the flavour of 14th century Florentine language, the study focuses on the different solutions that have been adopted in order to meet the challenge of an exceptionally varied and polymorphic language. In particular, this work analyses and compares the translation strategies employed in specific passages of the Comedy, where Dante resorts to other languages – like Latin, Provençal and hellish monsters’ mysterious language – or to different speech patterns – like the realistic or the infantile language – or, finally, fulfils the potentialities of his own language through the invention of neologisms. The comparative analysis shows the different translation poetics, looking at the tendency to transpose or ignore some aspects of Dante’s language. The study of the different translations also allows a better appreciation of the semantic and expressive complexity of the Comedy language from an unusual point of view, that is by focusing on the translation problems and their solutions.

Titolo articolo: From Commedia to Comoedia. The Latin translations of the Divine comedy in nineteenth-century Italy

The history of the Latin translations of Dante’s Divine Comedy represents a relatively unexplored branch within the field of Dante studies. Between 1416 and 1876, Latin translations of the Commedia were written and edited by seven men of differing backgrounds and professions: Churchmen, humanistic scholars and academics. The early comprehensive attempts in both prose and verse were published between 1416 and 1431, and have recently received some scholarly attention. In contrast, three out of the seven Latin editions of Dante’s Commedia stem from the eras that preceded and immediately followed Italian unification and have yet to be studied. This essay addresses this lacuna and examines the history of the Latin translations of the Divina Commedia within nineteenth-century Italy.

Titolo articolo: Forme e modalità di consumo dell’acqua nella corrispondenza di Pietro Bembo

Forms and modes of water consumption in the correspondence of Pietro Bembo · The contribution inspects water management by the Bembo family at the Mill of Villa Bozza, in Santa Maria di Non, near Padua, analysing the Bembian correspondence. Many letters contain references to the mills and the villa, considered by Pietro Bembo as a place of shelter and reflection. Through the letters we find the issues and discussions which were developed by use and by the need to regulate the waterways who merged there and the resulting controversies that arose.

Titolo articolo: Emma Perodi ‘reporter’ per l’infanzia: I bambini delle diverse nazioni a casa loro (1890) (II)

Emma Perodi ‘reporter’ for children: I bambini delle diverse nazioni a casa loro (1890) (ii) · This paper is about a multi-level analysis of the reportage for children I bambini delle diverse nazioni a casa loro (1890), written by the Tuscan writer Emma Perodi. First, I have offered a historical, language and publishing overview concerning the popular literature for children in the late 19th century, especially that one based on geo-cultural topics, and I have stressed its possibilities to be used out of school by a potentially cross-over public. Then I have pointed out the inspiring reasons and the public of the successful Bel Paese by Antonio Stoppani, gaining a comparison with our reportage, that seems to be moved by an educational purpose, unique and futuristic at that time. A short literary and language writer’s profile is followed by a survey concerning the addressing ways and the emotional involvement strategies oriented to the reader, the styles, swinging between plainness and a vivid and widespread descriptivism, the textual forms set in the description of the types of childhood observed in the countries explored. Finally, a more detailed enquiry into the language choices, in particular the lexical ones, demonstrates that in Perodi’s (travel-) popular prose, even if an overall colloquial form prevails, traditional elements and modernizing solutions, Tuscan-Florentine words and expressions and borrowings coexist. The analysis allows to prize the thematic and formal congruence of a project of educative italianization enriched by a modern multicultural perspective.

Titolo articolo: «Ancora questi miei ecclesiasti non sono diventati Qohélet». Lingua e stile delle traduzioni del Qohélet di Guido Ceronetti

«Still these my Ecclesiastic don’t become Qohélet». Language and style of Guido Ceronetti’s Qohélet translations · The poet, translator and much more, Guido Ceronetti, often translated some of the books of the Old Testament starting when he was very young and stopping only in old age. In particular, the five editions of the Qohélet, published by three different publishers, between 1970 and 2001, show five stages of a continuously modified translation, leaving room for interesting variations. These variations are indicative of three decades of Ceronetti’s linguistic evolutionary process, which aims at creating a new language that expresses the truth in the same way as the Qohélet Jewish verses. To achieve that goal, the translator is willing to sacrifice loyalty to the text. A first rather obvious variation, immediately visible on the page, is the fragmentation of the period and of the verse itself. Ceronetti probably intended to reproduce the essentiality of the Jewish verse. On one hand, he breaks the syntax and makes the verse very short, separating the subject and verb and sometimes eliminating the verb altogether, on the other he accelerates the rhythm of reading by synthesizing an entire Jewish verse in one long line. Specifically, it is easy to note – as in this article through the analysis of some verses – the exasperation of the asyndeton in the 1988 edition and the predilection for subordination in the 2001 edition. The second group of variations leads to the analysis of the outcome of the two topics in the Italian language that, intertwined with each other, constantly recur and are legitimately considered the main ones in the book of Qohélet : uselessness and cyclicity. In both cases, the true, deep meaning of the Jewish verses becomes the main purpose, the only really important one for which it is acceptable to manipulate the Italian language and make it only an instrument in the hands of the poet. The careful study of specific verses of Ceronetti’s translations, taken from the first chapter, also gives some guidelines to the author’s thinking : the idea of emptiness, the vision of cyclicity together with that of infinite linearity, both expressed through interesting lexic and syntax.
