The success of the international conference, “Italian studies periodicals in the world”, sponsored by “Esperienze letterarie” and held in Naples in November 2000, confirmed the deep and growing scholarly interest in specialist academic periodicals. Such publications have long represented one of the most effective means for intellectual and cultural exchange. The conference in Naples offered the opportunity, arising from the increased number of journals of Italian studies, of developing two closely inter-related initiatives:

1)      An easily accessible, international diffusion of the contents of periodicals which respects the specific features and bibliographical unity of each journal;
2)      A user-friendly and multi-structured point of access to the contents of the periodicals.

The ITALINEMO (italianistica nel mondo) project was established to facilitate the implementation of both initiatives. The website presents a regularly updated bibliographical database, which allows the retrieval of bibliographical records collected, since 2000, from a large (and growing) number of Italian and international journals. The selected periodicals focus on Italian literary and cultural studies.

ITALINEMO’S STRUCTURE

In general terms, ITALINEMO consists of two interrelated elements:

  1. An analytical presentation of each issue of the selected journals:
    The selected periodicals have been assigned to a large group of collaborators, whose task is to analyse each issue in order to gather pre-established data which is to be placed in a project-specific database. Thanks both to the collaborators’ analyses and to the software, the presentation of each issue, based on an accurate reconstruction of its main characteristics, is further enriched by a concise abstract of each article. These elements will facilitate searches. They also constitute an organic collection of periodicals, in which each journal is represented by the material gathered from the issues published since 2000, as well as by a brief profile accompanied by a reproduction of its cover.
  2. A database.
    The database allows the contents of the site to be searched on the basis of the journals’ bibliographical features. It is also possible to perform both simple and advanced searches by the name of the author of articles and reviews, by the name of the author of reviewed books and studies, by the title of the journal, by the words contained in the titles of articles, by keywords, and by the year of publication  of both articles and books presented in the website.

In addition, the website includes:

  1. Pages presenting brief bio-bibliographical profiles of the ITALINEMO research group;
  2. Pages containing different sets of data and figures gathered from the analysed information, allowing the verification of the total number of records contained in the site, the total number of periodicals, the number of records connected with each journal, the most frequent searches, and the last 20 searches performed by users;
  3. Information (conferences, seminars, publications, etc.) provided by the website’s visitors and sent to the following address: notizie@italinemo.it.
